What are you working for? (065)

What are you working for?

Life can get busy, and when it does we often lose sight of the bigger picture. Or perhaps, we have not even put in the time to figure out what the bigger picture looks like for us. To survive a life of work, we need to answer this question for ourselves as early as possible: what is the long term goal? Is it to move to Kenya and build a house? Is it to work remotely and travel the world while earning? Is it to buy a sailboat and sail around the world? Is it to be a food vlogger? Is it to achieve financial independence and retire early? We must think about our goals, both long term and short term, for knowing what we are working toward helps immensely in maintaining motivation and consistency.

A nice exercise is to write 10 goals out in the morning, 10 days in a row, without referencing earlier lists. It is completely okay to repeat the same goals each day, but do not look at previous lists while writing them. By the end, review and consolidate your list of 100 goals (10 each day) into the top 5 goals that you care about the most. Focus on these.

What I’m Reading

Last week I read Managing Oneself by Peter Drucker. A fantastic book, and again, a short one. I would recommend this book to everyone, as you could probably read it in an afternoon and learn something about how you work and learn. The main takeaway is that we all need to act like the CEO of our own lives. Knowing how we work, what our strengths are, what we are weak at, what our values are, and what we will not compromise on… among many other aspects of life.

This week I will be reading The Lords of Strategy by Walter Kiechel. It is about the birth of corporate strategy… whatever that means - I guess I will know soon enough.

Have a great week :)
