Applying Coulomb's Law to your relationships (047)

1st Law Monday - April 1 2024

Happy Monday.

Coulomb's Law, developed by Charles-Augustin de Coulomb in 1785, describes how the force between two charged particles is proportional to the magnitude of their charges, and inversely proportional to the distance between them.

This law is similar to Newtons Law of Gravitation, as it agrees that larger bodies and charges will attract each other more powerfully. However, this law goes further by introducing the concept of positive and negative charge. If particles have the same charge, they repel, while opposite forces will attract.

This applies to people as well as particles. However, when dealing with people, there are many more classifications than just positive and negative. Introverted/ extroverted, strict/ relaxed, goofy/ serious, analytical/ aloof, people cannot be boxed in and have the potential to demonstrate a never ending string of emotions and traits.

However, as Coulomb's Law predicts, if you are working or spending time with with someone too similar to yourself, you may begin to repel each other and stagnate. This can stem from an abundance of similar ideas, boredom, and getting too comfortable. It is better to work and spend time with people who are significantly different than yourself, while ensuring that there is still enough similarity that common ground is possible.

Seek out conversations with people you do not agree with to increase exposure to new ideas, and to get out of your comfort zone. New experiences fuel new thoughts and actions.

Have a great week :)
